Thiru. Thangam Thennarasu

Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Planning, Human Resources Management, Pensions and Pensionary benefits, Statistics, Archaeology, Electricity and Non-Conventional Energy Development

Hon’ble Minister Thiru Thangam Thennarasu holds the portfolios of Finance, Planning, Human Resources Management, Pensions and Pensionary benefits, Statistics and Archaeology, Electricity and Non-Conventional Energy Development. He was born in Mallankinaru village of Virudhunagar district. He earned his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a graduate engineer, he worked with SPIC (Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation Ltd.) for about 10 years before his political plunge.

Thiru. Thangam Thennarasu has more than two decades of legislature experience. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly five times starting with his first electoral victory from the Aruppukottai constituency in the 1997 bye-election. In 2006, he became the Minister for School Education, Sports & Youth Welfare and Archaeology.

As the School Education Minister, he implemented the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education, paving the way for quality education for children. He was instrumental in introducing the Activity Based Learning (ABL) in Primary Education and Active Learning Methodology (ALM) in upper primary sections. During his tenure, he also spearheaded the project of setting up South Asia's 2nd largest library, Anna Centenary Library in Chennai.

He is a voracious reader and a good orator. His interests include Archaeology, Ornithology, Wildlife, Numismatics and Tamil Literature. He also comes with the ability to read the ancient Tamil scripts in temples and museums.
