As one of Australia's largest universities, Deakin has strong global linkages including with institutions Tamil Nadu. Born in South Wales, Iain spent much of his childhood in Hampshire. He studied Medicine at the University of Leeds, and remained in the city to complete his postgraduate studies in surgery. He was appointed Lecturer in Surgery at Leeds University, and later, Consultant Surgeon at Leeds General Infirmary.
Prior to taking up his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University in July 2019, Professor Martin was Vice-Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University. He has previously a Professor of Surgery at University of Auckland, and was subsequently appointed as Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic at the University of New South Wales in Sydney in 2012.
