Arvind Subramanian

Former Chief Economic Advisor to Govt. of India, Member of Economic Advisory Council to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

Dr Arvind Subramanian, who is the member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics since 2007, previously held the Dennis Weatherstone Senior Fellow position during 2013–14 and took leave for public service until August 2023
During his tenure as chief economic advisor, Subramanian spearheaded the annual Economic Survey of India, a widely acclaimed document on Indian economic policy and development, with the 2018 edition garnering 20 million views from 190 countries in its first year. He initiated significant reforms, including the nationwide goods and services tax (GST), a bankruptcy code addressing the Twin Balance Sheet challenge, and innovative schemes like the JAM trinity and universal basic income.
Subramanian authored acclaimed books like "Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China's Economic Dominance" (2011) and "India's Turn: Understanding the Economic Transformation" (2008) Recognized as one of Foreign Policy magazine's top 100 global thinkers in 2011, he has contributed extensively to academic journals and major publications such as the Economist, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, and others, in addition to being a regular columnist for Project Syndicate. Subramanian served at the International Monetary Fund and played a role in the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations at the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
He obtained degrees from St. Stephens College, the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad, and the University of Oxford (M.Phil and D.Phil).
