The leather industry in Tamil Nadu provides employment for around 600,000 individuals, with an impressive 85% of the workforce being women.
The state boasts a substantial 38% contribution to India's output of footwear and leather products.

The Tamil Nadu government has strategically identified four locations for the establishment of Mega Leather Parks with the aim of attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). These locations include Panapakkam, Bargur, Perambalur, and Tindivanam.

Ambur has earned the distinction of being officially recognized as a 'Town of Export Excellence' under the Foreign Trade Policy for the period 2015-20.
